Throne of Glass written by Sarah J. Maas

Blurb: After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin.

Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king’s council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she’ll serve the kingdom for four years and then be granted her freedom. Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilarating. But she’s bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her … but it’s the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best.

Then one of the other contestants turns up dead … quickly followed by another. Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.

My Take on it: Now forgive me as I did read this back in April, but haven’t posted a review until now so my thoughts are less “together” than they would be if this review were more fresh in my mind. I like a good tough girl story, (is there anyone who doesn’t?) and Celaena is tough, she’s had to be. As a girl fighting against men she is often underestimated, but she has the skill to prove herself and she is a little cocky which is different in a female character, but cool. I loved the parts of the book that delved deeper into her past and would love to learn more about who she was and how she became an assassin. I enjoyed the other characters as well, Celaena is not the only tough girl in the story and that was nice too. It is full of magic and humor and butt kicking so it was a really fun and easy read. There were a few little parts that I felt were written wrong or unusual for the character, for lack of a better way to put it, but it was easy to overlook and move on. It is the first in a series of 6, YA novels by Maas. As this book was one that I got as a book exchange for bookclub I hosted the April book club. We had fun doing our own “Champion Test” quiz for the book.

So I am passing on my copy! I am the only person who has read it so the book is like new.
